Case Study: Why Your Commercial Heat Pump Water Heating System Can Benefit From Having a Bock Swing Tank Plus in the Design

Swing tanks are an essential component to ensure the efficiency, reliability, and end-user satisfaction of commercial heat pump water heating systems. The primary function of a swing tank is to maintain setpoint temperature in a hot water recirculation loop. This is especially critical in single-pass heat pump systems as optimal efficiency depends on colder return water temperatures. A system that allows individual components to operate as designed will provide reliable hot water and equipment longevity. A swing tank can also provide emergency hot water if the heat pump cannot meet demand or augment energy input if system performance is reduced at lower ambient temperatures.

All in all, swing tanks significantly contribute to the performance, durability, and efficiency of commercial systems. So why does the Bock Swing Tank Plus do all this better than the rest?

Why Bock?

First off, we offer a five-year limited tank warranty when others only offer a three-year warranty. The durability of our tanks is second to none because, as we say, they’re “Built Like a Bock.”

It features step modulation between three inputs (min, mid, max) and selects the initial input based on feedback from an outdoor temperature sensor. When the outdoor temperature is ≥40°F, the initial input is at min input; between <40°F and ≥24°F, the initial input is at mid input; and at <24°F the initial input is at max input.

The Swing Tank Plus attempts to recover tank temperature at the lowest electric resistance input, and an additional input is added if the sensor continues to drop from the setpoint.

Available in two input configurations: (12.1 / 24 / 36kW) and (18 / 36 / 49.5kW), in 208, 240 or 480 VAC, and in 50 and 119 gallon models.

Versatile piping options allow for installation flexibility: Five 2-inch NPT connections on the 50 gallon; five 2.5-inch NPT connections on the 119 gallon. With optional upper-side connections and extra pipe nipples included.

For additional control and monitoring—BACnet MSTP, alarm out, and enable/disable are included.

Too much input? A DIP switch is available to reduce the maximum input and avoid exceeding current draw limits.

Finally, it is AHRI Certified, UL listed, and all Bock products are made in the USA.
