Zurn to Sponsor Next PHCPPros Webinar on Building Water System Safety in the Era of COVID-19

The PHCPPros Special Webinar Series has attracted hundreds of attendees and was launched with the goal of keeping readers educated and engaged in the face of COVID-19. The series allows readers to log on each week and learn something new from plumbing, heating, cooling, and piping professionals. The next webinar will be sponsored by Zurn, a leading manufacturer of engineered water solutions. Covering the topic “Building Water System Safety in the Era of COVID-19,” the free webinar will feature two Purdue University experts and take place on May 8 at 2:00 p.m. (CDT).

COVID-19 stay-at-home orders have left many commercial buildings empty. Gyms, offices, dormitories, and other public spaces have not been used for weeks and may continue to be unused or underused for weeks or months more. This is problematic for water safety. When water sits still, it can accumulate water contaminants including lead, copper, and harmful organisms. Purdue University experts, Dr. Andrew Whelton and Dr. Caitlin Proctor, will discuss actions building owners can take to maintain or improve water quality, and professional plumbers, contractors, and facilities managers may have a role to play.

Dr. Whelton is nationally recognized for his excellence, impact, and creative contributions in public health and engineering research. His 20 years of experience in the private sector, with the U.S. Army, and at Virginia Tech, NIST, University of South Alabama, and Purdue have shaped his career. He currently leads a Building Plumbing Safety Initiative supported by the Environmental Protection Agency. He is also working with Dr. Proctor on a rapid response building water study to the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Proctor has spent her career researching the microbiology of drinking water, with special interest in the growth of opportunistic pathogens like Legionella pneumophila and the development of biofilms in pipes.

There will also be two representatives from Zurn, John Mankins and Daniel Danowski, who will be available during the Q&A portion of the webinar to provide insights from the manufacturer’s lens. Mankins is product manager of Water Control & Water Safety at Zurn, and Danowski is product manager of Finish Plumbing at Zurn.

In May, PHCPPros will announce more webinars that will cover a range of topics, from working from home to plumbing design and clean energy.
