SFPE Europe Announces Inaugural Recipient of European Fire Safety Engineering Award

Brian J. Meacham, PhD, PE, CEng, FIFireE, FSFPEThe Society of Fire Protection Engineers and SFPE Europe are pleased to announce Brian J. Meacham, PhD, PE, CEng, FIFireE, FSFPE, as the inaugural recipient of the European Fire Safety Engineering Award. Presented at the SFPE European Conference & Expo on Fire Safety Engineering in Berlin, the 2023 award recognizes exceptional efforts in fire safety engineering.

Over the last five years, Meacham has made exceptional efforts in the area of fire safety engineering in Europe. He has always been a strong advocate of performance-based design; this has had a considerable impact on the code development process in many European countries. With his recent scientific advancements, to some degree done during his stays in European universities, he is leading the paradigm shift of understanding fire safety as a socio-technical construct, providing new pathways for developing regulations and revisiting typical roles of stakeholders. During the last five years, Meacham was also involved in the development of the Master of Advanced Studies Program of Fire Safety Engineering at ETH Zurich and in the development of SFPE Europe as an industry stakeholder.

Headquartered in Brussels, Belgium, members of SFPE Europe include the Society’s 20 European chapters in Albania, Austria, Benelux, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Malta, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Serbia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and United Kingdom, plus student chapters at the Main School of Fire Service, International Master of Science in Fire Safety Engineering, Imperial College/Greater London, and the University of Edinburgh.

Nominations for this award were solicited through an open nomination process in early 2023; SFPE Europe will announce on sfpe.org/Europe when nominations are being accepted for the next recipient of this award.
