ASPE NYC Chapter Establishes New Scholarship in Honor of Past President

Carmen “Rick” SorvilloASPE’s New York City Chapter is establishing the Carmen “Rick” Sorvillo American Society of Plumbing Engineers New York City Chapter Scholarship at The City College of New York’s (CCNY) Grove School of Engineering. The scholarship is named for Carmen “Rick” Sorvillo, in honor of his dedicated service to the ASPE NYC Chapter since 1976 until he passed away on December 11, 2020, during which time he served as Treasurer, President, and on the Chapter Board of Directors. ASPE is dedicated to the advancement of the science of plumbing engineering, to the professional growth and advancement of its members, and to the health, welfare, and safety of the public. With this mission in mind, the NYC Chapter recognizes that the first step is to assist those still finishing their education.

At CCNY, more than 70 percent of students receive financial aid. Scholarship funding helps students focus more exclusively on their studies, participate in experiential college activities, and ultimately enables them to complete their studies. The current cost of tuition for City College undergraduate full-time students is $3,465 per semester for in-state students and nearly double for out-of-state students. The Carmen “Rick” Sorvillo American Society of Plumbing Engineers New York City Chapter Scholarship aims to help alleviate the financial burden associated with a college education though scholarship support for two students annually for at least the next five years.

Two scholarships will be awarded annually in the spring semester. Each scholarship will consist of a one-time monetary award of $1,000 that will be accompanied by a complementary student ASPE membership, paid for by the ASPE NYC chapter. The inaugural awards will be made in the Spring 2023.
