Adhesives and sealants have been in use for many hundreds of years. Some date back to the city of Thebes in 1300 BC. Most materials prior to the early 1900's were materials from nature. The last one hundred years has brought about many advances in this science with a variety of materials developed for many different applications. Today, applications of structural adhesives are found in many products used in very aggressive environments. Aircraft, automobiles and even the space shuttle have been recipients of this technology. The factors influencing the selection of an adhesive or sealant for a specific application are many and include: Stress, Chemical Factors, Exposure, Temperature, Biological Factors, and Working Properties. The science needed to successfully apply adhesives and sealants requires many disciplines: included are Polymeric Materials, Chemistry, Physics, Surface Science, Mechanics, Science of Adhesion and Joint Design. This course discusses the design and test criteria required to successfully use structural adhesives in a potable water system. First, the selection of the best adhesive characteristics to address internal and external environmental factors is discussed. Second, a design concept that insures the structural adhesive will successfully join tube and fittings and insure sealing redundancy is discussed. The third topic provides the system test methodology to insure a reliable and robust design. The last topic provides some simple application/assembly considerations.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will be introduced to the major factors to consider in adhesive joint design.
  2. Participants will learn the development steps required to insure a robust structural adhesive joint for pressure piping.
  3. Participants will learn how to evaluate structural adhesives that may be candidates for joining pressure piping.
  4. Participants will learn how design and application is validated through the use of design of experiments (DOE) and testing.
  5. Participants will learn practical considerations in application and assembly of structural adhesive joints.  



Tommy Jamison P.E.

Tommy Jamison P.E is currently VP Product and Process Development for Mueller Industries, Inc.  Mr. Jamison's work included manufacturing systems and process design, product design and P&L responsibility. He was previous VP Strategic Engineering and VP Manufacturing Copper Fittings.  Tommy is a full member of ASPE (Memphis Chapter) and has been involved with ASME B1622 J-Committee member, Advisor Board University of Memphis Mechanical Engineering Department and Advisory Board Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) State of Mississippi.   Tommy has a Bachelor of Science- Engineering degree from  Mississippi State University and a Master of Science- Applied Statistics (Experimental Design) from the University of Alabama and Executive Program, Kellogg Graduate School of Management, Northwestern University.
