ASPE’s first president, Don Dickerson, passes away

ASPE regrets to inform the plumbing industry that Donald F. Dickerson, PE, CPD, FASPE, who was instrumental in founding the Society in 1964 in Los Angeles and served as ASPE’s first president, died on Saturday, March 24. Don was also very involved with IAPMO as chair of the ANSI A40 Safety Requirements for Plumbing Committee (the original American National Standard) and as a voting member on the IAPMO Uniform Plumbing Code Technical Committee. “Don and his expertise, critique, and wit will be missed by his family, the Society, and the plumbing industry at large,” says ASPE President William F. Hughes Jr, CPD, LEED AP, FASPE. More

ASPE’s regional workshops head to Canada

Registration is open for ASPE’s Sustainable Design Workshop, being held June 6–7 in downtown Montreal. The workshop will cover green plumbing system design strategies to help participants increase the water efficiency of their projects and earn LEED points. Breakfast, lunch, and 1.5 CEUs are included with the registration fee. The workshop will be taught in English, but handout materials will be in English and French.

Chicago Chapter member William (“Bill”) Erickson, chair of C.J. Erickson Plumbing Co. in Alsip, Illinois, received the Mechanical Contractors Association of America’s Distinguished Service Award—the MCAA’s highest honor—for his dedication to the plumbing and mechanical contracting industry. More

International green construction and pool and spa codes released

The 2012 International Green Construction Code was developed by the International Code Council with the cooperation and support of the American Institute of Architects, ASTM International, ASHRAE, USGBC, and the Illuminating Engineering Society.


Developed by ICC with support from the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals, the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code encompass the design, installation and inspection of aquatic facilities  based on current ANSI (APSP) standards, technologies, and code provisions.


ASHRAE 189.1 can be used to comply with IgCC

ANSI/ASHRAE/USGBC/IES 189.1 (2011): Standard for the Design of High-Performance, Green Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings now serves as a compliance option with the newly published International Green Construction Code, which allows permit applicants, rather than the authority having jurisdiction, to choose the standard to comply with the code. More


NSF plastic pipe and fittings standard required by UPC

The Uniform Plumbing Code now requires plastic pipe and fittings to comply with NSF/ANSI Standard 14: Plastics Piping System Components and Related Materials. More
