The main purpose of a plumbing venting system is to prevent loss of trap seal in pipes, which could allow offensive sewer gases to enter buildings. Two of the main causes of trap seal loss are backpressure and siphonage, so this presentation describes methods to prevent these from occurring in drainage systems, including topics such as venturi action, the spiral theory, pressure differentials, hydraulic jump, and air-admittance valves. It also explains the most common types of plumbing venting systems, their main components, and design criteria.
*This is the actual educational presentation as it was presented at the 2008 ASPE Convention in Long Beach, CA.
