Big James and The Chicago Playboys to headline ASPE’s Sunday Night at the House of Blues presented by Sloan Valve
ASPE is excited to announce that six-time Living Blues Magazine Critics Choice Award winner Big James and The Chicago Playboys will perform at the 2014 ASPE Convention and Exposition welcome party on Sunday, September 21. A Chicago native, “Big James” Montgomery has played with the Little Milton Band, Buddy Guy’s Blues Band, Eric Clapton, George Clinton & Parliament-Funkadelic, and Dan Ackroyd, and his current band The Chicago Playboys has performed at legendary Chicago venues such as B.L.U.E.S. on Halsted, the House of Blues, and Buddy Guy’s Legends. Entrance to the welcome party is free for those who are full Convention registrants, and tickets are $50 for Expo-only registrants. You can purchase your ticket when you register online.

Members: Volume 2 of the ASPE Journal is now available
The second edition of ASPE’s newest member benefit, ASPE Journal, includes a new regular feature: the ASPE Legislative Report by ASPE’s Senior Director of Technical and Regulatory Affairs, Billy Smith, FASPE. Volume 2 also includes articles on wet venting, reclaimed water treatment methods, and high-purity water system sizing.

UCLA Extension’s Advanced Plumbing Systems Design courses start September 29--enroll by September 2 to save up to 10%
Registration is open for fall courses in UCLA Extension’s Advanced Plumbing Systems Design certificate program, which is sponsored by ASPE. This fall, the following courses will be offered: Plumbing Systems I: Code and Engineering Fundamentals, Plumbing Systems II: Advanced Engineering Systems, Fire Protection for Plumbing Engineering, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, and Electrical Design and Construction. The courses can be taken individually or as part of the certificate program.


Long Island Chapter reaches membership goal
The Long Island Chapter is pleased to announce that it has reached 50 members by ASPE’s 50th Anniversary, a goal the Chapter set two years ago. The Long Island Chapter remains committed to the Society’s goals for increasing membership and ensuring the Society's longevity. The Chapter is proud to be part of ASPE's great history and vows to continue growing and meeting whatever new challenges the Society may experience during its next 50 years. The Chapter’s delegation will be in Chicago and looks forward to the festivities, business, and, of course, the anniversary celebration.

Dallas/Ft. Worth Chapter announces scholarship winner
On behalf of the Dallas/Ft. Worth Chapter, Region 5 Director Kelvin Kennedy, CPD, GPD, CD, and DFW Chapter Vice President, Technical Troy Skiles, CPD, GPD, presented a check for $1,000 from the Chapter’s Richard Ellis Scholarship Award to Rene Le of Kansas State for her dedication to the plumbing industry while working as an intern at Schmidt & Stacy. Engineering firm leaders are optimistic about the current business climate
More than 68% of U.S. engineering firm leaders think the current business climate is better than last year at this time, and 60.5% say their backlogs are larger now compared to last year, according to the American Council of Engineering Companies’ Engineering Business Index. However, only 40.9% believe opportunities in the public water/wastewater sector will grow during the next 12 months.

According to a National Science Foundation study that surveyed 5,300 engineering alumnae spanning six decades, the most common reasons women leave engineering careers include lack of opportunities for advancement, caregiving responsibilities, and pursuing better opportunities in other fields.
