Changes to the Chapter Operations Manual are needed by June 22
During the Joint Region Meeting, chapter representatives will discuss proposed amendments to the Chapters Operations Manual (Chapter 4 of the Policy & Operations Manual), and we ask all chapters to review the manual and send proposed changes to email@example.com by June 22. Chapter officers can find the manual in the chapter officers' section of aspe.org. Each chapter should choose a representative to attend the Joint Region Meeting, which will be held during the 2014 Convention & Exposition.
World Plumbing Day video helps spread the word about water
Did you know that more than 700,000 children die each year from communicable diseases caused by drinking contaminated water? Using numerous facts and figures, a new video from the World Plumbing Council, featuring WPC Chairman Sudhakaran Nair, explains the importance of protecting and conserving the world’s water supply. This video would make an excellent vehicle for promoting World Plumbing Day in your community this March.
Canadian trade associations ask Parliament to recognize World Plumbing Day 2014
The Canadian Institute of Plumbing & Heating and the Mechanical Contractors Association of Canada recently submitted a letter to the Constituency Office requesting that March 11, 2014 be proclaimed as World Plumbing Day in the Parliament of Canada and recognized in the House of Commons.

A new documentary by The New York Times takes an inside look at the city’s rooftop water storage towers and finds alarming evidence of neglect and disrepair, possibly endangering the residents who use the towers for drinking water.
Drinking water tops the list of best inventions
Chemical engineers recently voted drinking water as the most important chemically engineered invention/solution of the modern era, according to a survey by the Institution of Chemical Engineers. Sanitation was voted the eighth most important invention.
China plans to spend billions to clean up its water supply
More than 50 percent of China’s groundwater is heavily polluted, threatening the drinking water supply for its 1.35 billion residents, so the government has pledged to spend $330 billion to improve the quality of the country’s water by 30 to 50 percent through investments in treatment technologies, according to Reuters.

New WaterSense initiative aims to help hotels save water
The H2Otel Challenge encourages hotels to assess water use, change products or processes to save water, and track progress. A series of educational webinars begins February 27.
Online course explains changes to national energy standard
On May 14, “Significant Changes to Standard 90.1-2010,” offered through the ASHRAE Learning Institute, will provide an in-depth overview of the standard and answer questions about changes from previous editions. Other new courses being offered this spring cover commissioning, energy efficiency, and environmental quality topics, among others.
NIBS launches its Building Sciences Online Academy
The first course, “Introduction to COBie,” explains how to implement a Construction Operations Building information exchange (COBie), which allows information to flow from the design phase, be added during construction, and be delivered to the facility manager upon completion.
Committee members sought to update National Green Building Standard
NAHB, ICC's partner in the development of ICC 700: National Green Building Standard, has issued a call for committee members, with applications due March 16. They also seek proposed changes to the standard by March 24. More information can be found here.
Certification bodies needed for pilot program on environmental labeling
This new ANSI program was implemented to determine the eligibility of a Type I environmental labeling certification scheme and to assess the competence of ecolabeling certification bodies. Applications to participate in the program are due by April 11. More>>
